Typically darkfield light or DOAL is used in these applications. Darkfield lights will illuminate the code from a low angle, making the background appear black and the elements appear white. A DOAL will illuminate brightfield, making the background white, and the elements black. the DOAL light should be about 2x the size of the Field of view.
