Create a Dump File in Windows 7

Recommended Posts

When a program in Windows crashes, it may be useful to create a Dump file to provide the software developers with the state of the software at the time of the dump file creation following the crash.  The example below is based on retrieving the dump file for AutoVISION.

  1. Run AutoVISION and reproduce the error.
  2. When the error has occurred, click CTRL-ALT-DEL and Start Task Manager.
  3. Click on the Processes tab, right click AutoVISION.exe and select Create Dump File as shown in the picture below.

  1. It may take a minute to save the dump file.  Once the dump file has been created it will show you the location where that file is stored on your hard drive.
  2. Using Windows Explorer, go to the location of the dump file and compress the file into a zip file.
  3. Send the zip file to Microscan. (This file will be large (50-100+ MB) and will need to be uploaded to a FTP site to transfer the file).
